One of The Oldest Companies

Isuzu is one of the oldest companies in the Japanese automotive industry, dating back to 1916. Isuzu was started by Tokyo Ishikawajima shipbuilding and Engineering Co. and Tokyo Gas and Electrical Industrial Co. It wasn't until 1934 that Isuzu was officially named after the Isuzu River in the Ise Shrine area. The company changed names again 1949 to Isuzu Motors Limited.

Isuzu Trucks

. The Wolseley model A-9 was the first domestically produced truck, making its appearance in 1922. The Isuzu trucks that were produced played a major role in reconstruction following World War II. Development and production of trucks happened at a tremendous pace and the vehicles were used to carry products and food. This is when Isuzu's passion for trucks began and since then, a large variety of models including light duty trucks, heavy duty and even buses have come off the Isuzu production lines, quickly going to work to support economic growth.

"Trust Me"

American Isuzu Motors was founded in 1980 and quickly became one of the largest SUV distributors in the world. The first SUV introduced was the Isuzu Trooper in 1985. It was this vehicle that Isuzu used to launch a new marketing campaign where the character Joe Isuzu came to life. It didn't take long for the Isuzu Trooper and Joe Isuzu to become household names. This new campaign helped launch Isuzu into America's best-selling brand of sport utility.

"Isuzu: We don't make cars"

Isuzu continued it's clever marketing in 1998 by following up the Trooper with the Amigo. The Amigo was shown driving down stairs and around in circles on a beach, spoofing a 1970's Slinky commerical. In 1998 Isuzu also used the tag line "Isuzu: We don't make cars.", furthering their hold in the SUV market.
